My problem with the way disability is spoken about in social justice circles is the lumping together that happens. What is “disabled” is so, so, so, so varied, and I don’t know how to even speak about privilege in this situation. My problems are a chronic autoimmune disease, mental illness, and addiction. My experience is going to be very different from someone with serious mobility issues or someone who is blind or someone who is dyslexic and so forth. Is it horizontal oppression when someone with a different disability perpetuates stigma about addiction? When someone with a strictly physical ailment demonizes mental illness? Or is it that our experiences are just so different, that our interests are not always the same? I don’t have the answers to these questions. What about when purely enabling behavior masquerades as social justice (like people who insist that drug addicts and alcoholics shouldn’t go into recovery because HEY I CAN DO WHAT I WANT)?
Ableism exists, absolutely, it’s just that I think it’s much more complicated than it tends to get credit for.
